The following tasks look at transportation as it relates to the movement of people from one place to another. Some also look at how foods and goods can make it from production to distribution in a cost efficient and timely manner. The economics of this movement is critically important in the world today. These tasks tightly connect social studies and the sciences through a variety of considerations and variables.

Fuel efficiency is an important issue for transportation producers making planes, trains, and automobiles. Fuel efficiency can save people and businesses money. Additionally, this efficiency can help bring less carbon into the environment. To create fuel efficient vehicles engineers and designers must look at all aspects of the vehicle under consideration. These aspects may include the fuel consumed, the materials used to create the vehicle, the weight of the vehicle, and the aerodynamics of the vehicle.

Through these Defined STEM tasks students will have to consider many of these variables and use critical thinking and problem solving skills to develop creative and innovative solutions to many problems associated with transportation.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tab][vc_tab title=”References” tab_id=”1404930227-2-662367-ad8b”][vc_column_text][/vc_tab][/vc_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_text_separator title=”Elementary School” title_align=”separator_align_center” color=”green”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_accordion title=”Performance Tasks” collapsible=”yes” active_tab=”false”][vc_accordion_tab title=”Vehicle Design”][vc_column_text]

There are many ways people get themselves and goods from place to place. A vehicle can be used to take people where they need to go. A vehicle can be a car, truck or bus. Most vehicles have wheels. Vehicles can be used to transport things we buy and sell and for other important jobs. You have been asked to make a vehicle that can be used for a very special need. You will be showing this vehicle to the head of design and production of an auto manufacturing company. An auto manufacturing company produces vehicles. Produce means to make something, you will be helping this company by showing them the vehicle you made.

They are also delicious. Farmers grow fruits and vegetables on their farms. When they are ready the fruits and vegetables are picked. The farmer now needs to get them to a grocery store.[/vc_column_text][vc_button2 title=”Enter Task” color=”blue” size=”sm” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fdlrn.us%3Fm5obd|title:Farmers%20and%20Transportation|target:%20_blank” style=”rounded”][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab title=”Transportation Engineer: Maglev Trains”][vc_column_text]Alternative fuels and means of travel are essential and your team is proposing an environmentally responsible and efficient alternative to traditional travel methods. You are a member of a team of engineers who have been studying the economic and environmental benefits of using maglev trains as a means of mass transportation in the U.S. Countries such as Germany and Japan have already begun using these ideas to create trains for transportation. This type of transportation is efficient, environmentally responsible, and fast! Trains can reach speeds in excess of 400km an hour. This technology could revolutionize the transportation systems in the U.S.[/vc_column_text][vc_button2 title=”Enter Task” color=”blue” size=”sm” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fdlrn.us%3Fb4978|title:Transportation%20Engineer%3A%20Maglev%20Trains|target:%20_blank” style=”rounded”][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab title=”Fuel Efficient Cars”][vc_column_text]In the United States, the federal government has mandated improved automobile fuel efficiency in the form of the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE). President Obama is currently in the process of revising this mandate to roughly double automakers’ fleet-wide vehicle fuel economy averages to 54.5 mpg by 2025. Your knowledge of science and manufacturing will be critical to the ongoing success of a small automaker. You will need to research ways to increase fuel economy in vehicles through the use of lightweight materials for certain parts and areas of the automobile.[/vc_column_text][vc_button2 title=”Enter Task” color=”blue” size=”sm” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fdlrn.us%3Fj451w|title:Fuel%20Efficient%20Cars|target:%20_blank” style=”rounded”][/vc_accordion_tab][/vc_accordion][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_accordion title=”Literacy Tasks/Constructed Responses” active_tab=”false” collapsible=”yes”][vc_accordion_tab title=”Automobile Industry Efficiency (3-4)”][vc_column_text]

The car industry has been an important part of American business for a long time. How can car companies continue to be successful now and in the future?

The automobile industry has been an important part of American business for a long time. The question is how can the industry maintain its position as it moves through the 21st century? How can this industry increase this position?

It allows people to travel great distances in a matter of hours instead of days or weeks.[/vc_column_text][vc_button2 title=”Enter Task” color=”blue” size=”sm” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fdlrn.us%3Firncr|title:Maglev%20Trains|target:%20_blank” style=”rounded”][/vc_accordion_tab][/vc_accordion][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_text_separator title=”Middle School” title_align=”separator_align_center” color=”green”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_accordion title=”Performance Tasks” active_tab=”false” collapsible=”yes”][vc_accordion_tab title=”Chamber of Commerce: Automobile Industry “][vc_column_text]

Through this performance task, students will demonstrate an understanding of concepts associated with science, technology, mathematics, and social studies. Students will need to use critical thinking, problem-solving skills and systems thinking to develop a persuasive argument related to this task. The media resources will provide an overview of many of the critical factors to be considered. This task will require students to conduct and analyze research, make appropriate decisions based upon their findings, and communicate this data in words and images so that the audience can understand the potential benefits.

You are a travel agent specializing in trips to historic sites. You have been contacted by a family of four who needs your help. They are thinking about a coast-to-coast vacation from Baltimore, MD to Los Angeles, CA. They want to travel by train and would like to visit at least four National Historic Landmarks between these two locations during their trip. They are willing to stop along the way and rent a car to get to these landmarks. Depending on the distance from the train stations, the family may need to stay in a hotel. To assist in planning the lengthy trip, you are to design a scale map of their travels, plan a calendar for the trip, suggest the sites to visit, figure the amount of gas necessary for the trip by automobile, and calculate the cost for the trip by locomotive.

As an aeronautical engineer, you will be responsible for being aware of the specific design requirements and limitations that are necessary to create three new model planes to be sold by your company. From the specific materials that are allocated, you will be responsible for finding the best way to use and combine these materials to meet the goals (fastest, farthest, and slowest). Your team will then present your designs and the results to the company’s leadership team. This team will choose the most successful designs to be mass produced and sold to the public.
